Wise Words that Inspire

"If you want to change the world, prepare to feel the full force of the reaction against you from those that have the most to lose." Niccolo Machiavelli

"The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. One thing we know: our god is also your god. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator". Chief Seattle

Volume 4 (Issue 2) Sep-Oct 2005

Dear Reader,

The recent hurricanes that devastated parts of the USA and the fact that the Arctic ice shelf has melted for the fourth straight year to its smallest area in a century provides more conclusive evidence of climate change. Even President Bush recently acknowledged that climate change is underway!

  • Getting personal with climate change - we take a look at "the Weather Makers," a book just released by Dr Tim Flannery that outlines constructive ways to cut your greenhouse emissions.

  • An Hills Solar system (fully installed) that pays for itself! We have teamed up with mecu (one of Australia's leading credit unions) to offer customers low interest finance for their new Hills Solar water heater, start cutting emissions and slash your water heating costs.

  • Timber House of the Future for sale - if you made it along to the recent Houses of the Future exhibition that toured Sydney and Melbourne, you would have seen the very stylish Timber House. Now it is up for sale.

As always, we welcome your thoughts and feedback on the newsletter and stories related to the environment. The deadline for contributions to the next issue (November 2005) is November 4th 2005. Send us your feedback or stories

Thanks ... The Ecological Homes Team

Getting personal with reducing
greenhouse gas emissions

Ways to Reduce your impact

In his recently-released book, The Weather Makers, author Dr Tim Flannery provides a "Climate Change Checklist", suggesting ways that each of us can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced as we go about our daily lives.

The Weather Makers checklist is reproduced below along with further information to help you make the small life changes that can have a big impact in reducing climate change.

  1. Change to an accredited Green Power option. Eliminate household emissions from electricity Green Power is government accredited clean, renewable electricity from the sun, the wind, water and waste. Only accredited Green Power guarantees that you support investments in new renewable energy capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Look for the Green Power "tick of approval" when choosing your supplier.

  2. Install a solar hot water system. Up to 30% reduction in household emissions Further information about solar hot water can be found on the Sustainable Energy Authority Victoria and Your Home websites. You may also like to consider insulating your existing hot water system, or installing a high-efficiency gas hot water heater.

  3. Install solar panels

  4. Use energy-efficient whitegoods - up to 50% reduction in household emissions from electricity Before you purchase your next appliance, be sure to check out the Energy All Stars website, which compiles the top performing appliances. The Energy Rating website provides more detailed information about appliances' energy efficiency.

  5. Use a triple-A rated shower-head - Up to 12% reduction in household emissions.

  6. Use energy-efficient light globes - Up to 10% reduction in household emissions The Australian Greenhouse Office has more information on energy-efficient lighting.

  7. Check fuel efficiency of next car - Up to 70% reduction in transport emissions. And with rising petrol prices, choosing a fuel efficient car can also save you money. Visit the Green Vehicle Guide or ratings on the environmental performance of new vehicles sold in Australia.

  8. Walk, cycle or take public transport - Can reduce transport emissions The TravelSmart website provides information, toolkits and resources to help you reduce car usage and making smart choices about alternative forms of transport.

  9. Calculate carbon footprint - Can eliminate transport and household emissions Climate Friendly provides a series of calculators to help you determine your "carbon-footprint" - the amount of CO2 that is produced by your daily activities. The Earth Day Ecological Footprint Quiz helps you estimate your ecological footprint, which includes CO2 emissions.

  10. Suggest a workplace audit - Up to 30% reduction in emissions Most of the tips on this page can be applied to the workplace - but there is much more that can be done. If you are an employee, ask your employer if an environmental plan is in place and suggest a workplace audit.

  11. Write to a politician about climate change - In NSW write to Premier Iemma asking him to commit to a clean energy future thepremier@www.nsw.gov.au. The Climate Action Network website also has a list of actions.

Timber House of the Future for sale

This prototype house was developed for the Houses of the Future Exhibition and displayed at the Opera House and Sydney Olympic Park.

The house represents an investment by the timber industry and its partners of around $500,000 in design, material and labour. It is now offered for sale.

About the House

The house is to be considered as a prototype, an exploration into different design concepts. It is unique, incorporating new products and design which may not have been used in this form previously. New products include the paper/resin cladding and the third generation power cells used as a skylight.

The Timber House showcases a "Fully Integrated ESD solution", incorporating some of the most up to date technologies to deliver a home that is comfortable to live in and provides a sustainable housing option for the future. The Timber House aims to challenge traditional thought about how timber can be used and what constitutes a ‘timber’ product. It introduces advances in material technology, using fibre products which, with carefully-managed farming, can be excellent renewable resources.

Though the building has been designed with consideration to modern building codes, no warranty is offered that it will meet all aspects for the intended new use. It will be up to the successful applicant to ensure that it meets the relevant codes and standards that apply to its intended use.

A full list of inclusions will shortly be provided.

Design

The Design of the timber house was conceived and developed by Innovarchi architects. Innovarchi is an award winning design and research based architecture practice whose multi-cultural design team is directed by internationally trained architects Stephanie Smith (M Arch) and Ken McBryde (M Arch).

Construction

The structure was pre-cut in Victoria and transported flat-packed to NSW. The pieces were assembled in a workshop outside Sydney by relatively unskilled labour. The building was assembled in six pieces and transported to site on three separate trucks two being wide load loaders. Each piece is required to be lifted by a tractor crane and sited on concrete block piers. The pieces were then joined and removable cladding located over each joint. The building will be required to be deglazed during transportation, including large sliding doors on all sections.

The deck structure is made up to 10 separate pieces. The maximum hight of the largest piece is approximately 3.8 metres.

Approximate Sizes of elements:

  • Living Room Left - 4.8 x 3.6 m

  • Living Room Right - 4.8 x 3.0 m

  • Living Room middle - floor element 4.8 x 2.4 m

  • Living Room middle – ceiling element 4.8 x 2.4 m

  • Bedroom – 3.9 x 4.8 m

  • Bathroom – 3.9 x 3.3 m

Moving Date

The successful tender will be responsible for transporting from its current position at Sydney Olympic Park. The exhibition closes October 30. On October 31 Multiplex (sponsors of the exhibition) will begin the dismantling process. The site needs to be completely cleared by November 12.

To find out more about the Timber House of the Future and to access images of the building please visit the following web sites:
