Flushing toilets were invented over a hundred years ago by the unfortunately named Thomas Crapper. They were developed at a time when water shortages were unheard of and were designed more for the convenience of the user than for any economical or environmental reasons.

The flushing toilet is responsible for about one third of all water used by the average Australian household - a total of about 78 billion litres of drinking quality water is flushed down the nation's loos every year! The cost of supplying this water and disposing of it is enormous - in 11 years since 1980, local and state governments spent $10.6 billion on sewerage systems and treatment, about 11.6% of their total government expenditure for that period.

Non-flushing or composting toilets have been developed to combat this enormous waste of a very scarce resource whilst converting waste into a disease-free compost which can be safely used on the garden.

Australian Innovation - The Rota-Loo is a non-flush composting toilet system that has been developed in Australia. It uses an aerobic composting system, with rotating bins under the seat that can easily be removed, once the composting process has happened. The liquid is evaporated through heat generated by the sun falling onto the back section of the toilet structure.

No Nasty Smells - When installed correctly, the ROTA-LOO provides the optimum conditions for the natural hygienic process of composting to occur. It allows for aerobic composting to occur - composting with air. It is non-aerobic composting (like flushing poo down a toilet) that creates the nasty smells.

No Need to Flush - Composting is the most appropriate method for dealing with human waste and is completely natural. A composting toilet is traditionally a waterless toilet and therefore respects precious water supplies and doesn't create any pollution. You don't need water to transport your deposits from one place to another. The system utilises gravity and has to sit directly below the toilet room.

The toilet 'pedestal' is not much different from a flush toilet, except that there is no 'S' bend, cistern or flush button.

Every domestic system consists of a polyethylene, rotationally moulded outer tank which has a full access door located on the side.

Inside there are six removable collection or compost bins, which are housed on a turntable. The turntable is manually rotated once a bin becomes full (hence ROTA-LOO).

Easy-to-Use - The access door on the outer tank is removed, you simply grab the handle of the full bin and easily rotate the turntable one position to the left, and this allows the next empty bin to take its place and receive your deposits.

The full bin remains inside the system to continue the composting process and won't be seen again or emptied until all the other bins have been filled and it once again returns to the filling position under the toilet pedestal and waste chute.

Food for the Garden - By this time the contents of the bin have been transformed into a soil rejuvenating humus, at this point you simply pull out the bin and turn the contents into a shallow hole in the garden then return the bin. It's that simple. There is no raking or bending and digging and maintenance is a breeze.
